PLAYERS COMMENTS:
The Bandit continues to receive rave reviews from everyone who has played it. The staff is
friendly and helpful. The greens are fast and undulating. There is plenty of water and
bunkers and some holes are quite scenic. There are well placed bunkers and trees. The
eighteenth hole, called "Long Creek" is a par 5 uphill to a tight green nestled
behind a tree that can make or break a round. Depending on the wind, it can be played several
different ways. You can make par, but you may end up with a triple or quad. Number
1 hole is called "Blind Date" and Number 2 is called "Two Much Too
Soon." You get the picture. But while a scratch player would find this course very
challenging, the five sets of tee boxes make this course inviting for all
level of golfers. Golfhappy's foursome was very excited to shoot in the mid 90s from the
Whites. The last time I played the course was in super shape and the
reports I am getting from local golfers are great. This is one
of the most scenic in the area. The management is proud of the fact that
Golfweek recently
named the Bandit among the Top Ten Public Course in Texas.
Distance: About 45 minutes from downtown. Take I-35 to New
Braunfels. Exit 187 (the Lake McQueeney exit) and turn right at the light onto FM 725.
Course is about 5 miles on the left.
Food: In the tradition of the old German
settlers of the Texas Hill County, the Bandit recently opened a bona fide grill. They are
serving hamburgers, hotdogs and a great sausage dog (with sausage from Grandzin's).
They also have fried appetizers!

PLAYERS COMMENTS:
Nominated by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine
as a best new course, this one will surely please the most discriminating player. The
course is a "Must Play!" A true Hill Country Course, you need to stay on
the fairways or bring plenty of balls. Using an old farm to build on this choice
piece of Texas Real Estate, this land has been artfully transformed into what many golfers
will refer to as among the very best of what this great state has to offer. Each
hole is a separate experience, a beautiful scene completely by itself. You do not
see other fairways. Each cart is equipped with Global Positioning System, GPS,
giving you the exact distance to the pin on each hold. GPS also shows you the pin
placement on each green. It's like playing with a professional caddy who knows the
course. It's neat! With five sets of tee boxes on each hole, demanding greens, natural
hill country surroundings and magnificent limestone waterfalls on the 19th and 18th holes,
this 7077 yard course (from the tips -- that's right) it presents a significant challenge to
event the most experienced golfers (and even those who think they are). Super golf
and homesites are available.
Golfhappy comment:
One of the top courses in the area under new management. I hear
nothing but good comments about this upscale golf course. One of my personal top
choices to play. Golfhappy

PLAYERS COMMENTS: This
course is consistently rated one of the top
muni courses in the USA. The hill country layout is challenging for all levels of play.
Gold tees are available for scratch golfers. Some players feel that the narrow fairways
allow the ball to roll to the center, but we don't think this is evident to most players.
Ride this one... it's real hard to walk. Because of it's popularity, the crowded course
can play very slow. Go early or allow five hour rounds on really nice days. However, it's
so pretty and great to play it's worth the time. If you can find a nice
December day when the younger set is in school, that's the day to play
this one.
Distance: Allow 30 minutes minimum from downtown. From I-10 going west,
exit Loop 1604, then go west 3 miles to the Kyle Seale Pkwy. Turn right and drive 2 miles
to the course. Watch real close for signs to clubhouse, which is on the left side of road
up a long paved road.

PLAYERS COMMENTS: The course
has matured into one of San Antonio's must play courses. In
Golfhappy's opinion it's right at the top of the list. The clubhouse is
one of the best I have ever seen.. My biggest problem with this course (other than losing golf
balls -- plan on it) was the golf course is so drop-dead-beautiful. I really mean
that some of the holes are so breath-taking that you have a hard time keeping a proper
pace of play... you simply want to stop and take in the view. Streams and small
waterfalls with ripples contribute to the feeling of space and tranquility. The
fairways are separated from view of each other for the most part, lending to the
beauty. OK, enough about the view. Bring your best game and lots of balls.
This is not a course that will be easily tamed, but why would you want that... it's
Texas and this is Hill County Golf at its best. A must play... even if you have to
save pennies or forgo dining out for awhile to pay the green fee, you
really need to play this course.

the fourth-best new, affordable public course in America. Public courses were rated on
shot value, design variety, memorability, aesthetics and playability. The course
opened in February 2000.
PLAYERS COMMENTS,Summer 2008:
The course is in the best shape in years. They rate it a 9-10. This
course is very, very exciting and enhances San Antonio's reputation as a golf destination.
A unique combination of natural topography and man-made mounds and bunkers make this a
super course. Native South Texas vegetation and golf course grass seed formulations on
fairways and greens will provide state-of-the-game playing surfaces. The views are
spectacular, with several holes playing to greens well below the tees, while other lead to
a significant rise to reach the putting surface. Fairways, which on some holes are tight,
are often sloped and guarded by bunkers. The tips will not be played by the faint hearted,
but with four sets of tee boxes, the course can be enjoyed by all levels of players. Owned
by the City of Universal City, the management has spared little in designing and preparing
a terrific layout and are to be commended. From Golfhappy's personal perspective, with all
the different situations one can imagine getting into here, I will want to return to play
this one over-and-over. Although this is a fairly new course, this puppy has grown up and is
ready to hunt!
New Comment received Oct 4, 2000 from a reader: I played this course this morning. This is a beautiful course with
extraordinary fairways and greens. One of the nicest courses I have played in San
Antonio. I rate this course a 9 1/2.
New Comment received Nov 9, 2000 from a reader: The overseeding of greens and fairways was completed in a very
timely manner just prior to the rainy weather. The seed matured well and is presently
being cut to specification. The golf course is in immaculate condition.

Summer 2008:
Under new management with Foresight Golf the course is back to being a
championship course. What a golf course. Pecan Valley was rated in
the top three courses in San Antonio in 2002 by the golf experts in the San Antonio
Express-News special golf edition in April 2002. This is a must play facility.
It was already a super course with a rich tradition and was home to the 1967, 69 and 70
Texas open. The course is rated among the top 50 public courses by Golf Digest. New
placement of greens and water up the level of play and the the local players are
raving about it. It's close to downtown and the Riverwalk and the staff is top
notch. The many mature pecan trees and natural terrain with a winding creek make
this a challenging course for any level of golfer. Pecan Valley also was chosen No.1 in the best hole category. "Pecan
Valley's No. 14 is one of the truly great par 4's in all of golf," said Brian
Gathright, director of instruction at The Academy at La Cantera. "It is a
demanding tee shot with a lake down the right side at the corner of the dogleg right.
(There are) trees on both sides. A well-placed drive down the right-center of the fairway
leaves a difficult uphill second shot to a moderately undulated green."
Pecan Valley scored again in the toughest hole rankings. The experts liked the
course's No. 2, a par-4, 453-yard nightmare. The hole is long, narrow and uphill. What
more is there to say?
The staff is customer friendly and of eagle quality.
If you're in San Antonio you need to think real hard before missing this one.
Note From a Reader: You forgot to mention that this was the site of
the 1968 PGA Championship (50th) won by Julius Boros by one stroke over the great Arnold
Palmer. It was a great course back then, I grew up playing that course which at the
time had its nine toughest hole lit for night play but the PGA made them remove the
poles before they would allow it (PVCC) to be the Host. Just a bit of info I thought I
would pass along. Thanks to Bob B.
Distance: Driving time about 20 minutes from downtown. Take I-37 (Hwy 218)
south. Exit exit Southcross and go East on Southcross. After some distance you will come
to the course on your left. Entrance is marked.

PLAYERS COMMENTS: Built in 1993, this magnificent course, carved out of an old
quarry, is rated in the top ten of "America's Top State Golf Courses" by Golf
Digest. It is in the top 75 Upscale Courses and was rated
in the top three of public play courses in San Antonio by a panel of golf experts in the
San Antonio Express-News recently..
The views of San Antonio (especially at dusk) and the surroundings are
so stunning that local players keep going back just for the scenery. But
don't lose yourself in sightseeing. You need to concentrate on the golf.
It is everything golf should be. The front nine plays through open
fields and alongside streams, giving it a decidedly links feel. There is
water which comes into the picture on a number of holes on the front.
After making the turn you will understand where the course gets its name. You play in a huge, abandoned rock
quarry, with steep walls that go up, up, up, almost 100 feet on three sides. One of the
holes is called "Escape from Alcatraz," and another is aptly named
"Reload." It's not for the faint of heart, as you will see when you tee off over
a deep canyon to the fairway on the other side. The Quarry's
No. 17 (par 4, 386) was picked as the most visually pleasing hole in San Antonio by the
2002. "It has a breathtaking tee shot to what looks like a landing strip sandwiched
between a chasm on one side and a boulder-laden cliff on the other side," said Jim
Barker, a PGA teaching professional at The Quarry. The
clubhouse has a new upscale restaurant which is fast becoming a place to be seen by
locals. The service and amenities are first class. The lunch menu is
very affordable and offers a magnificent view for your dining companion. This one must be played while visiting
San Antonio if possible.
Player Comment from Kevin W:
Played Olympia Hills
on 22 July 08 and had a wonderful round. Considering how dry this summer
has been, the greens were in very good shape. Grounds crew has done a
good job of making sure the course is playable and not chewed up from
all the rounds. It is a very tight course off the tee on numerous holes,
so you can lose a lot of balls if you don’t drive it straight. Course
offers a challenging test for novice and experienced golfers alike so it
is easy to enjoy a round regardless of how long you have been playing.
Try to get out early if possible during the summer (it is South Texas
after all) so you can take advantage of the slower greens before they
dry out during the day. Great course.
Note:
The Quarry was tied with LaCantera as the best place to hang around for a cool one after a
round by the experts. Editors comment:
We are not sure if these are the expert golfers, but hey, it's San Antonio.
Distance: About 15 minutes from downtown. Take Hwy 281 north and exit East

PLAYERS COMMENTS: Somewhat narrow. tree lined fairways protect fast, undulating greens on this 27
hole Tifdwarf grass course. Each 9 hole layout lives up to its name. Lots of water and
trees on the two lower courses. Trees and hills galore on the new Ridge Course. If you
play the Ridge, bring lots of golf balls... I'm not kidding. Built in the beautiful hill

into play. This place is beautiful! Do not miss this one. If you are playing South Texas,
it's about 10 degrees cooler in the summer.
Lodging: There

PLAYERS COMMENTS:
The best testament one can give The Golf Club of Texas is that it hosts
some big local tournaments. The greens and tee boxes are some of the very best San
Antonio has to offer. This is truly a high end facility. If you have not been out to
enjoy this course you really need to. The place is all greened up and with all the
landscaping it's just a real pretty experience with great golf.
The golf carts are outfitted with GPS which gives accurate distance to
the pin and shows the contours of the greens. This track combines
Links Style golf with Hill Country golf, giving players a taste of both
types of golf. The course is among the best that San Antonio has to
offer. The senior staff is very experienced and the service is all that you would
expect at a high-value public course. The new clubhouse is beautiful and features a
full service restaurant. After playing a round, you will really enjoy just sitting on the
porch and taking in the view.
Golfhappy's Note: Lot's of folks are under the mistaken idea that this golf course is
"too far out on 90 West." I want to correct that. If you look at driving times
at many of the courses on this page you will see distance... 25 minutes. Well, I timed the
drive from downtown to the Golf Club of Texas and it's a 20 minute drive. But it's out in
the country y'all. So you city slickers need to take a deep breath on the way out...
that's fresh air. It's ok, you'll get used to it and it's good for you. Come on, it's only
20 minutes.
Directions: 20 Minutes from downtown. Take U.S. 90 west to Texas 211 (2 exits past
loop 1604) and we on the right. From downtown take 90 west to Texas 211.

PLAYERS COMMENTS: Golfhappy and the "Wild Bunch" he plays with every
Sunday morning (who would kill for a quarter skin) play Woodlake a lot. Local
golfers will be happy to learn that Woodlake is now in the hands of John Clay with Joe
Valdivia joining him..
(7/04) fairways and greens very good. The first cut is a little long and you
can lose your ball fairly easy if you stray off of the fairway RS. Golfhappy and his
merry group played Woodlake on July 18, 2004. The course is in top-notch condition and has
to be rated as one of the top courses in San Antonio. The greens are fast and the fairways
are in great shape. Plenty of water add to add to the challenge this course provides.
Narrow fairways with some streams and ponds in play lead to small, fast, undulating greens
protected by sand bunkers. The greens are very fast and you will need your lob wedge to
hold them on approach pitch shots. The opening hole is the number three handicap, so be
sure to warm up before you start. There are plenty of rolling hills and wind is usually a
factor. The front is more open than the back, which has lots of trees protecting the
narrow fairways. It's a fun, pretty course and the staff is courteous and professional.
