PLAYERS COMMENTS: From Robert S. -- Played The Bandit (7/04) fairways and
greens in excellent shape. Course in tip top condition.
Opened for play in November 1997, The Bandit continues to receive rave reviews from everyone who has played it. The staff is
friendly and helpful. The greens are fast and undulating. There is plenty of water and
bunkers and some holes are quite scenic. There are well placed bunkers and trees. The
eighteenth hole, called "Long Creek" is a par 5 uphill to a tight green nestled
behind a tree will make or break a round. Depending on the wind, it can be played several
different ways. You can make par, but you may end up with a triple or quad. Number
1 is called "Blind Date" and Number 2 is called "Two Much Too
Soon." You get the picture. But while a scratch player would find this course very
challenging with five sets of tee boxes this course is inviting for all
level of golfers. Golfhappy's foursome was very excited to shoot in the mid 90s from the
Whites. The last time I played the course was in super shape and the
reports I am getting from local golfers are great. This is one
of the most scenic in the area. The management is proud of the fact that
Golfweek recently
named the Bandit the #7 Public Course in Texas.
Distance: About 45 minutes from downtown. Take I-35 to New Braunfels. Exit

Food: In the tradition of
the old German settlers of the Texas Hill County, the Bandit recently opened a bona fide
grill. They are
serving hamburgers, hotdogs and a great sausage dog (with sausage from Grandzin's).
They also have fried appetizers!

PLAYERS COMMENTS: Thanks to Frank H for the comments -- I finally
played The Buckhorn this weekend! It was a beautiful, but I think easy course. Very wide
open with only a couple of dog-legs as I recall, and everything else straight as an arrow.
They really could have toughen up this course a bit more, I think. The number one hole is
very nice, and I wish I had a camera with me to take a picture of the green with that huge
oak tree just behind it. The fairway and greens were in excellent condition, and with a
very affordable price, this course is like a siren that wails for me to come back for

named to Golf Digest magazine's list of 2001 America's Best New Courses. The magazine
rated Olympia Hills as the fourth-best new, affordable public course in America.
Public courses were rated on shot value, design variety, memorability, aesthetics and
playability. The course opened in February 2000.
PLAYERS COMMENTS: This course is very, very
exciting and enhances San Antonio's reputation as a golf destination. A unique combination
of natural topography and man-made mounds and bunkers make this a super course. Native
South Texas vegetation and golf course grass seed formulations on fairways and greens will
provide state-of-the-game playing surfaces. The views are spectacular, with several holes
playing to greens well below the tees, while other lead to a significant rise to reach the
putting surface. Fairways, which on some holes are tight, are often sloped and guarded by
bunkers. The tips will not be played by the faint hearted, but with four sets of tee
boxes, the course can be enjoyed by all levels of players. Owned by the City of Universal
City, management spared little in designing and preparing a
terrific layout and are to be commended. From Golfhappy's personal perspective, with all
the different situations one can imagine getting into here, I return to play this one
over-and-over. Although this is a new course, this puppy has grown up and is ready to
hunt!
New Comment received Oct 4, 2000 from a reader: I played this course this morning. This is a beautiful course with
extraordinary fairways and greens. One of the nicest courses I have played in San Antonio.
I rate this course a 9 1/2. Thanks for the info Ky.

Summer of 2006
ushered in the first and only Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course tucked into the awe-inspiring San Antonio
Hill Country.
Cascading water features, challenging golf and breathtaking
twenty five mile views of the Guadalupe River Valley will become the
hallmarks of this outstanding course. A chain of hilltops will form the
perimeter of the golf community, encircling the 7,450-yard course
that
meanders through the oak laced valley below. Emerald fairways and velvety
greens will undulate between natural limestone canyons.
Given
a 780 acre canvas, out of the 8,600-acre Cordillera Ranch community, on
which to express his vision, Jack has produced a masterful
routing that
embraces and captures authentic Hill Country beauty, carefully preserving
and enhancing the native grasses around the course
that are so
characteristic of this area of Texas. Early on, Nicklaus and the development
team made a commitment to create a core
design rather than having homes
fronting both sides of the fairways. Estates, nestled among acreage homesites, will be set back from
the course, camouflaged by the terrain,
live oaks and indigenous grasses, with strict adherence to the architectural
guidelines of this
totally unique, truly Texas community. Consequently, the
authenticity of this inspired land will be preserved and revered.
With the
par 3 16th hole, Jack has captured the essence of the Hill Country, along
with great golf, by placing the peninsula-shaped
green just over a canyon,
between twin water falls…a player’s dream, a photographer’s canvas, and a
certain destiny as one of
the most talked about holes in all of Texas.
Distance: About 30 minutes from downtown San Antonio. Take I-10 west and
exit Boerne mile marker 546.
Go right two miles and look for entrance on the right.

finalists in the “Private Club” category of the magazine’s 2007 “Development

The course combines some of the most unique play in
the area with a course designed to provide an exciting golfing experience
for players of all levels. Beautiful oak trees and meandering
streams give the golf course its character, with elevation changes,
multi-tiered greens and challenging areas of forced carry-including water
features-and areas of forced lay-up in a links-style course. All of
this combined with the Texas wind makes Maverick a formidable challenge for
even scratch golfers. It's one of the only only true links courses in
south Texas. The
staff is super and the course is very affordable. Maverick has a
unique driving range.
New comment from John H of the Iron Thong Golf Group
http://ironthonggolf.com 13 January
2007.
Welcome to the
Maverick. We had 6 members show, and all of you are crazy Thongers. Here I
am sitting in the truck thinking why I drove 50 miles in this weather to
play golf. Thanks to you other 5 it wasn't for nothing! :).
The Maverick opened December 16th, with a low course
record (71) thus far. I can say without a doubt it is one of the
nicest golf clubs around and you know it as you drive up to thru the course
to the club house. This course, although new, just looks expensive and
beautiful. The clubhouse and proshop is super nice, and the burgers are
first class. After the round enjoy a cold beer or two and sink your mouth
in one of their awesome burgers and enjoy sports of one of their eight 50"
plasma TV's. I really like this place it is just awesome for a golf
course clubhouse. They are building what looked like a conference
recreation room right next door too. WOW! This place is cool !!!!!!!!
The Driving range is awesome, although it was closed
because of the weather you will not find another like it anywhere in South
Texas. One of the coolest aspects of this driving range is a island green
in the middle of a pond which looked to be to be 100 to 120 yards depending
on the driving area. Super cool, just beautiful.
The Golf course will be one of the jewels in South
Texas this year - expect to hear a lot about it. Make no mistake this
course can play tough but offers a lot of opportunities to get birdies. If
it wasn't so mushy everyone of use would have scored at least 5-7 strokes
better. The number one and number two holes give you a good chance to get
out of the gates quick, and you'll need par or better here because the third
and fourth will rock your boat. This course can play really tough in the
front with the open plains, links style windy challenge if offers up. We
had a 2 club wind when we played, and I can see it even worse easily!
Prepared to get frazzled on a windy day.
The greens are MASSIVE. Many of the Greens are 50
yards deep - easily a four club difference depending on flag
locations. Oh, and if you like playing out of the sand, you'll get a chance
to do that too if you don't position your shots.
All in all this course is and will be first class this
year. I'm already looking forward to playing it DRY! :) Gulp!

This course is simply one of the best in the world. If at all
possible, play the Palmer course at La Cantera. I
mean that some of the holes are so breath-taking that you have a hard time keeping a
proper pace of play... you simply want to stop and take in the view. Streams and
small waterfalls with ripples contribute to the feeling of space and tranquility.
The fairways are separated from view of each other for the most part, lending to the
beauty. OK, enough about the view. Bring your best game and lots of balls.
This is not a course that will be easily tamed, but why would you want that... it's
Texas and this is Hill County Golf at its best. A must play... even if you have to
save pennies to pay the green fee you need to play this course.
Distance: About 25 Minutes from downtown.

flood. American Golf has recreated another magnificent course for San Antonio. It is
a must play. Home to the 1967, 69 and 70 Texas open, the course is rated among the top 50
public courses by Golf Digest. Course is 18 hole was designed in the 60's and has many
mature pecan trees which come into play. A creek enters the picture on many of the
fairways, so you must play lay-up shots at times. This a challenging course for any level
of golfer. The staff is customer friendly and, as soon as the new clubhouse is finished,
it will have all the amenities of the higher priced spreads.

PLAYERS COMMENTS: Built in 1993, this magnificent course, carved out of an old
quarry, is rated the number one course
in Texas by the Dallas Morning News. It's
in the top ten of "America's Top State Golf Courses" by Golf Digest. It is in
the top 75 Upscale Courses. The views of San Antonio (especially at dusk) and the
surroundings are so stunning that local players keep going back just for the scenery. But
don't lose yourself in sightseeing. You need to concentrate on the golf. It is everything
golf should be. The front nine plays through open fields and alongside streams, giving it
a decidedly links feel. There is water which comes into the picture on a number of holes
on the front. After making the turn you find out where it course gets its name. You play
in a huge, abandoned rock quarry, with steep walls that go up, up, up, almost 100 feet on
three sides. One of the holes is called "Escape from Alcatraz," and another is
aptly named "Reload." It's not for the faint of heart, as you will see when you
tee off over a deep canyon to the fairway on the other side. The clubhouse has a new
upscale restaurant which is fast becoming a place to be seen by locals. The service and
amenities are first class. This one must be played while visiting San Antonio if possible.
Distance: About 15 minutes from downtown. Take Hwy 281 north and exit East

This18 hole public play course is a welcome addition to San Antonio's Southeast
side. The new facility is owned and operated by the same folks that own and operate
two other super golf courses; The Buckhorn in Comfort and The Bandit in New Braunfels.
The Republic is par-71 and measures 7,000 from the tips. But, not to worry,
there are five sets of tee boxes to accommodate all levels of player. The fairly
wide fairways feature Bermuda 419 and Bermuda Tifdwarf on the very large greens are
perfect for South Texas. Sand traps come into play often making this a great course
for risks and rewards for every level of golfer. There is water to contend with on
14 holes because, like most courses in San Antonio, there is plenty of recycled
water. The course is located along Salado Creek on , the creek and other
water be a factor in the play. The Republic has received rave reviews from all
the players since it opened.
Players Comments:
5-1-06 - The Republic remains a favorite among local golfers.
I like
all 3 of Foresight Golf's courses here, Republic, Bandit and Buckhorn. This course plays pretty good for me also with wide fairways and large and I
do mean LARGE greens. Sometimes a putter isn't enough club if your on the wrong end
of a green.
From Frank H: I played the
course on Aug 20, 2002 and it was simply super. The greens were outstanding and the
fairways nice and fluffy...you actually had grass to hit a decent iron shot. From Jeff L-H: Played the course in Aug
03. Really a super course, but it may have more sand than most. (Hope that you
did not find this out the hard way Jeff :-)
Directions:
S.E. Military Drive and bounded by South I-410 and
W.W. White, the course is 12 minutes from downtown San Antonio and two miles from Brooks
City-Base. Take Hwy 281 (same road as I-37) south from downtown and look for the

River Crossing Golf Club is a private course offering 18 holes
of championship golf nestled in the serene beauty of the Texas Hill Country, less than 20
minutes from San Antonio. Players enjoy panoramic views in a quiet, country setting.
PLAYERS COMMENTS: Golfhappy has played this course
often and I am very
impressed. Great golf with super greens and fairways. Most fairways are lined
with trees and not as open as they might appear. The course has plenty of water
including one island type green. (Don't tell anyone that the last time
Golfhappy played the par 3 island type green he birdied it by hitting short
into the water in front of the green and skipping the ball onto the putting
surface where it landed 3 feet from the pin :-) The course has lots of
elevations with some slope on fairways. The greens
are generally large and the Tiff grass provides plenty of speed. This course is
attracting lots of local tournaments and that's a good indicator of how well area golfers
like it. If you get a chance to play River Crossing do so. If you are looking
for a clubhouse that can accommodate lots of people this is a super venue with good
meals... including a full breakfast. I understand the course has a
relationship with the well known John Jacobs Golf Schools and I am still
gathering details. Golfhappy

PLAYERS COMMENTS:
The best testament one can give The Golf Club of Texas is that it hosts
some big local tournaments. The large greens and tee boxes are
some of the very best San Antonio has to offer. This is truly a high
end facility. If you have not been out to enjoy this course you really need
to. The place is all greened up and with the
unique landscaping it's just a real pretty experience with great golf.
The golf carts are outfitted with GPS which gives accurate distance to the
pin and shows the contours of the greens. This track combines Links Style
golf with Hill Country golf, giving players a taste of both types of golf.
The course is among the best that San Antonio has to
offer. The senior staff is very experienced and the service is all that you would
expect at a high-value public course. The new clubhouse is beautiful and features a
full service restaurant. After playing a round, you will really enjoy just sitting on the
porch and taking in the view.
Golfhappy's Note:

is "too far out on 90 West." I want to correct that. If you look at driving
times at many of the courses on this page you will see distance... 25 minutes. Well, I
timed the drive from downtown to the Golf Club of Texas and it's a 20 minute drive. But
it's out in the country y'all. So you city slickers need to take a deep breath on the way
out... that's fresh air. It's ok, you'll get used to it and it's good for you. Come on,
it's only 20 minutes.
Directions: 20 Minutes from downtown. Take U.S. 90 west to Texas 211
(2 exits past loop 1604) and we on the right. From downtown take 90 west to Texas
211.

Interview with Tom Fazio
Question: Can you tell us
a little about the character of the Briggs Ranch course?
Answer: I think that
people are going to be surprised when they come here. They're going to find an
unexpected treasure. First of all, the land itself is beautiful. than you have
that to work with, it really pushes you to get the most out of it. Each and every
hole on this course is designed to be special and memorable, and they will challenge you
in completely different ways. By the time you finish the front nine you'll think,
"Now how can the back nine match up with that?" And then, when you start
on the back nine, you'll understand that there is no letup; and then you cant wait to see
what the next hole brings. For the entire interview visit the web page at www.briggsranchrealty.com

The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course
Fall 2005 ushered in the first and only Jack Nicklaus
Signature golf course tucked into the awe-inspiring San Antonio
Hill Country. Cascading water features, challenging golf and
breathtaking twenty five mile views of the Guadalupe River
Valley will become the hallmarks of this outstanding course. A
chain of hilltops will form the perimeter of the golf community,
encircling the 7,450-yard course that meanders through the oak
laced valley below. Emerald fairways and velvety greens will
undulate between natural limestone canyons.
Given
a 780 acre canvas, out of the 8,600-acre Cordillera Ranch
community, on which to express his vision, Jack has produced a
masterful routing that embraces and captures authentic Hill
Country beauty, carefully preserving and enhancing the native
grasses around the course that are so characteristic of this
area of Texas. Early on, Nicklaus and the development team made
a commitment to create a core design rather than having homes
fronting both sides of the fairways.
Estates, nestled among
acreage home sites, will be set back from the course, camouflaged
by the terrain, live oaks and indigenous grasses, with strict
adherence to the architectural guidelines of this totally
unique, truly Texas community. Consequently, the authenticity of
this inspired land will be preserved and revered.
With the par 3
16th hole, Jack has captured the essence of the Hill Country,
along with great golf, by placing the peninsula-shaped green
just over a canyon, between twin water falls…a player’s dream, a
photographer’s canvas, and a certain destiny as one of the most
talked about holes in all of Texas. |
